Urswick Tarn, Great Urswick. Home to many wildfowl, the tranquil little tarn is edged in places with a wide band of thriving reeds. The ground rises to Birkrigg Common in the background.

The Pond, a lush verdant pool at Roanhead lies only three miles from Barrow's centre, in a secluded area littered with disused and flooded mine workings.

Substantial areas of exposed limestone are found on Birkrigg Common, with wind-bent bushes clinging to its deep clefts. Ulverston and the Coniston Hills lie in the distance.

Here the exposed rock points towards the Leven Estuary, and the hills above the Haverthwaite Mosses. The nearby stone circle shows that man has gazed out from this ancient site for thousands of years.
